The Chelleh-e Summer Celebration: A Traditional Iranian Midsummer Festival of Gratitude, Togetherness, and Shared Memories
As part of its commitment to introducing children to Iranian traditions and creating meaningful shared experiences for children and their families, Pardis Solaleh Kindergarten hosted the Chelleh-e Summer Celebration, a traditional Iranian midsummer festival that honors nature’s abundance, gratitude, and community. The event welcomed Preschool 1 and Preschool 2 children along with their mothers, offering a warm and engaging environment where families could experience one of Iran’s cherished cultural traditions together.
The program began with an introduction to the history and significance of the Chelleh-e Summer Celebration. Through age-appropriate storytelling and discussion, children learned that generations of Iranians gathered in the middle of summer to give thanks for the blessings of nature, plentiful harvests, and the life-giving warmth of the sun. They discovered that this celebration was a time for expressing gratitude, appreciating life’s blessings, and strengthening family and community bonds. These conversations introduced children to the values of thankfulness, mindfulness, and togetherness in a meaningful and engaging way.

After learning about the philosophy behind the celebration, the hands-on activities began. Guided by their teachers and working side by side with their mothers, the children prepared traditional refreshing summer dishes. Each group collaborated to gather the ingredients and make Ab Doogh Khiar—a chilled yogurt and cucumber soup—and Sekanjabin Cucumber Sharbat, a refreshing drink made with the traditional Persian sweet-and-sour herbal syrup known as sekanjabin. By chopping, mixing, and preparing the ingredients themselves, the children experienced firsthand how learning becomes more meaningful through observation, exploration, and active participation.
The presence of the mothers added a special dimension to the celebration. Working together allowed children to experience the joy of completing a shared activity while discovering that teamwork, cooperation, and shared responsibilities make every task more enjoyable. These moments strengthened the emotional bond between mothers and their children while creating valuable opportunities for conversation, interaction, and lasting memories within the welcoming community of Pardis Solaleh Kindergarten.
At the end of the activity, the children and their mothers enjoyed the dishes and drinks they had prepared together. Sharing Ab Doogh Khiar and Sekanjabin Cucumber Sharbat created a warm and joyful atmosphere while introducing children to traditional Iranian summer foods and beverages. The experience demonstrated that food is more than nourishment—it can bring people together, encourage conversation and collaboration, and create memories that last a lifetime.
One of the main goals of this celebration was to help children connect with Iran’s rich cultural heritage through authentic, hands-on experiences. When children participate in a traditional festival, learn its meaning, prepare its associated foods, and celebrate alongside their families, they develop a deeper understanding of their cultural identity. Experiences like these transform cultural traditions from stories into cherished childhood memories.
The Chelleh-e Summer Celebration once again reflected Pardis Solaleh Kindergarten’s educational philosophy that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Values such as gratitude, cooperation, responsibility, respect for cultural traditions, and the joy of togetherness are best nurtured through real-life, shared experiences. Filled with smiles, warmth, and meaningful connections, the celebration became a memorable day for children, mothers, and teachers alike, leaving everyone with lasting memories of a beautiful Iranian tradition.
